There is a blending of the dragon symbol. It can be understood as Satan, it can be understood as pagan Rome. And then you get in the chapter 13 of Revelation and the first beast in Revelation 13 is Catholicism, papal Rome, the power that follows pagan Rome. And once again there's this blending between Satan and the papacy, because we're told in the first part of Revelation 13 that to worship the beast of Catholicism is to worship the dragon. There's this blending in this second power that's under discussion in Revelation 12 and 13. The dragon can be interchanged in some respects between the papacy and Satan, because to worship the beast is to worship Satan. And then when you get to the last part of Revelation 13, once again we have this next power, the United States. And there is this close relationship. It's the United States that's going to force the world to set up the image of the beast through its economic power, through its military power. But when the United States in verse 11 disconnects itself fully from righteousness, Satan is going to arrive on the scene in history, is going to become directly involved with forcing the nations of the world to set up the image of the beast. And so these verses, there's this blending. So in these verses, who is it that makes fire come down out of heaven? Last Day Events, page 167. We must not trust the claims of men they may, as Christ represents, profess to work miracles in healing the sick. In this marvelous, is this marvelous when just behind them stands the great deceiver, the miracle worker, who will yet bring fire down from heaven in the sight of men. It is the lying wonders of the devil that will take the world captive, and he will cause fire to come down from heaven in the sight of men. He is to work miracles, and this wonderful miracle working power is to sweep in the whole world. When we're considering some of the errors that are presented in Adventism, I'm using them more as a sounding board to try to cement home some of these way marks we're dealing with in this time period.
